Paraguay President Santiago Peña Arrives in Ecuador for Talks with Daniel Noboa

Paraguayan President Santiago Peña arrived in Quito, Ecuador, on the evening of July 28, 2026, following a visit to Lima, Peru. He was received at the Mariscal Sucre Airport by Ecuador's Foreign Minister, Roberto Kury, shortly after 9 p.m.

The primary objective of Peña's official visit is to sign agreements aimed at bolstering binational cooperation between Paraguay and Ecuador. The Ecuadorian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the goal is to "strengthen a strategic alliance in security, trade, and prosperity to generate more opportunities and well-being for Ecuadorians."

This meeting follows a previous encounter on June 30, when Peña hosted Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa in Paraguay during the Mercosur Summit. During that summit, held near Asunción, the two leaders met, with Ecuadorian Foreign Minister Roberto Kury also in attendance.

President Noboa had recently traveled to Peru from July 27 to 28, 2026, to attend the inauguration of Keiko Fujimori. In Peru, Noboa discussed joint measures with the newly elected Peruvian president to enhance security along their shared southern border, including the use of advanced technology like sensors and drones. Noboa highlighted that approximately 70% of weapons and explosives entering Ecuador originate from this southern border.
