Paraguay’s foreign minister calls for a strategic leap with the EU

Paraguay’s Foreign Minister Rubén Ramírez Lezcano is calling for the relationship between Mercosur and the European Union to move beyond trade and take on a strategic dimension.

Speaking at the Euro-Latin American Parliamentary Assembly at the European Parliament, Ramírez Lezcano stressed the importance of deepening political dialogue between Paraguay and Europe. He also highlighted the historical, cultural and human ties linking the regions.

According to Paraguay’s Foreign Ministry, he said the relationship with the EU holds a strategic place in the country’s foreign policy, particularly in security, the fight against transnational organized crime, trade, investment and development.

The minister described the Mercosur-EU agreement signed in January as a “true turning point” in relations between the two regions. For Paraguay, he said, the agreement is not merely a trade instrument. It also offers a chance to bring together regions linked by history and shared values, create opportunities for citizens, promote investment and strengthen integration with one of the world’s major economic areas.

Ramírez Lezcano said Paraguay aims to project itself as a reliable country with macroeconomic stability, abundant clean energy and competitive conditions for investment. He called Europe a natural partner in that process and urged frank, constructive dialogue on areas of disagreement, based on mutual respect, national realities and states’ sovereign decisions.
