Paraguay’s September cinema lineup brings local comedy, star-led action and a new Resident Evil

September brings a broad mix of new releases to cinemas in Paraguay, from an eccentric homegrown comedy to action, horror, animation and fantasy films.

The local production Timoteo el loro que se volvió santo opens on Sept. 3. The comedy follows the accidental death of an elderly woman’s parrot and her friends’ efforts to hide what happened. Their efforts unexpectedly lead to a religious misunderstanding over an alleged miracle. Amada Gómez, Katty Pacuá and Olga Vallejo star, with Osvaldo Ortiz Faiman directing.

Also arriving Sept. 3 are Zona cero, a South Korean action horror film about people trapped in a building while infected attackers turn into murderous creatures after an apparent bioterrorist attack; La rebelión en la granja, an animated adaptation of George Orwell’s classic about animals taking over their farm; and El heladero, a horror film in which mysterious ice cream drives children in a U.S. town into a frenzy. The films feature Jun Ji-hyun and Koo Kyo-hwan, the voices of Seth Rogen, Gaten Matarazzo and Kieran Culkin, and Ari Millen, respectively.

The Sept. 10 lineup includes Código venganza, starring Jason Statham as an ex-soldier wrongly accused of killing an executive. He infiltrates a cargo ship to rescue his former employer’s son from the people who actually committed the crime. Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman return in Hechizo de amor: La magia continúa, a sequel to the 1998 romantic fantasy about witch sisters Sally and Gillian. El árbol mágico is a fantasy adaptation of Enid Blyton’s The Faraway Tree novels.
