Paraguay senators demand security model review after deadly police post attack

Paraguayan senators are calling for a complete overhaul of the nation's security strategy following a deadly assault on a police outpost in the eastern department of Canindeyú. The attack, which claimed the lives of two police officers and a civilian, with another officer wounded, has exposed what lawmakers describe as a critical vulnerability in the country's law enforcement capabilities.

During a Senate session, opposition senator Rafael Filizzola urged the government to "revise the security model," emphasizing the need for better intelligence. He questioned how security forces failed to anticipate the raid on the Naranjito colony in Ybyrarobaná, a region known for alleged links to drug trafficking and smuggling. "The presence of organized crime before a disorganized state must be a cause for review," Filizzola stated.

Fellow opposition senator Rubén Velázquez echoed these concerns, asserting that the attack "demonstrates the weakness of our security forces." He warned that "criminal groups are overwhelming us" and that the incident sends a "message of intimidation to the State." Senator Carlos Núñez, from the ruling Colorado Party, proposed reinforcing the National Police budget, while Senate President Basilio Núñez acknowledged the incident is "worrying."

The assault occurred Tuesday night in Naranjito, where unknown assailants attacked and burned a police post. The National Police has declared three days of institutional mourning. Authorities believe the attackers belong to a "criminal group."
