Paraguayan Politician Slams Wiens Prosecution as 'World Turned Upside Down'

Paraguayan legislator Daniel Centurión has strongly criticized the criminal charges filed against presidential candidate Arnoldo Wiens in connection with the Metrobús project, labeling the situation "the world turned upside down." Centurión argued that it is illogical for Wiens, who succeeded in halting a flawed public works project, to face prosecution while his predecessor, Ramón Jiménez Gaona, who initiated the troubled Metrobús plan, remains free. Centurión asserted that those who allegedly harmed public funds have been cleared, while those who safeguarded them are now being accused. He believes the prosecution is politically motivated, aiming to remove Wiens from the presidential race before the upcoming internal elections. Centurión suggested that the justice system is subservient to the current administration. He also cautioned against the political strategy, drawing a parallel to the case of former Ciudad del Este mayor Miguel Prieto. Centurión recalled that attempts to politically target Prieto by intervening in his administration ultimately elevated him to national prominence. He predicted a similar outcome for Wiens, suggesting that the perceived persecution will strengthen his candidacy rather than weaken it.
