Paraguayan rights group files UN complaint over senator's ouster

The Human Rights Coordinator of Paraguay (Codehupy) has formally lodged a complaint with the United Nations Committee on Human Rights concerning the removal of former senator Kattya González. The organization asserts that the violation of her investiture establishes a perilous precedent for democracy and electoral safeguards within the nation.

The Coordinator of Human Rights of Paraguay (Codehupy) reported that it will submit the dismissal of former senator Kattya González to the UN Committee. They warn that the abuse of her investiture sets a dangerous precedent for democracy and electoral guarantees in the country.

Codehupy's international action aims to hold the Paraguayan state accountable for what it describes as a systematic violation of political rights and due process guarantees. González was removed from her senatorial seat in February 2024, an action that Codehupy and González argue was politically motivated and lacked proper legal procedure.

The case gained momentum after internal legal remedies were exhausted. In June 2026, following a protracted period of delays, Paraguay's Supreme Court of Justice denied González's appeal against her removal. This decision came after a swift process on February 14, 2024, where González's impeachment was reportedly handled in a manner that did not afford her adequate time or resources to prepare a defense, allegedly disregarding the Senate's own internal regulations.
