Paraguayan survivor leaves ICU after Brazil bus crash

Nathalia Noemí Chávez Ríos, a 30-year-old Paraguayan, has moved out of intensive care at San José Hospital in Maravilha, Santa Catarina, Brazil. She had been hospitalized since a tragic bus accident on July 15 that claimed three lives.

Her recovery offers a glimmer of hope after the tragedy that affected several Paraguayan families. Chávez will now continue her rehabilitation with loved ones in Paraguay. A hospital video showed her thanking the medical team through tears, accompanied by her daughter. "I have no words, no language to say thank you for everything," she said. "Because of you, I am as I am. Today I can see my daughter, my family, everyone, and it is thanks to all of you, for the care, for the patience, for the affection you always gave us. Thank you very much, I will live my life thanking you."

The hospital called her recovery a "true miracle" and highlighted her resilience in the ICU. "Today, July 23, we celebrate a true miracle. After days of intense and tireless fighting in the ICU, Nathalia has won the greatest of all battles and is preparing to return to her beloved homeland, Paraguay," the hospital stated. The bed she leaves empty in intensive care is a source of pride for the medical team.

The accident occurred early on July 15 when a Paraguayan-registered bus overturned and fell down an embankment on the SC-492 road between Maravilha and São Miguel da Boa Vista in Santa Catarina.
