Paralympic champion Latif Romly to lead Malaysia at Commonwealth Games

Malaysian Paralympic champion Datuk Abdul Latif Romly will carry the national flag for Malaysia at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The two-time Paralympic gold medalist will lead the Malaysian contingent of 104 individuals, comprising 59 athletes and 45 officials, during the opening ceremony on July 23.

This honor is seen as a significant recognition of Romly's contributions to Malaysian sports. The announcement was made by the Secretary-General of the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM), Datuk Mohd. Nasir Ali, following an executive council meeting. World No. 1 lawn bowler Emma Firyana Saroji has been selected to carry the contingent's baton.

Malaysia will send a total of 104 participants to the Games, with 41 male and 18 female athletes competing across various sports. The contingent will participate in eight sports and six para sports, which are integrated into the main program. This integrated format offers both able-bodied and para-athletes a shared platform.

The Commonwealth Games in Glasgow will feature a different format, with only 10 sports contested, a reduction from previous editions. Malaysia's challenge is expected to be tougher as some sports that previously contributed significantly to their medal count are not included in this year's program. At the Birmingham 2022 edition, Malaysia secured seven gold, eight silver, and eight bronze medals, with four of those golds coming from sports not on the Glasgow program. Additionally, Malaysia confirmed its participation in 28 out of 43 sports at the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games in Japan.
