Parents sentenced to life for infant's starvation death in Germany

In a harrowing case of neglect, a German court has sentenced the parents of a four-month-old infant to life imprisonment for murder. The regional court in Itzehoe found the couple guilty of murder in conjunction with severe mistreatment of a dependent, stemming from the infant's death by starvation in September 2025.

The presiding judge, Johann Lohmann, described the case as leaving one "speechless." The court determined that the 24-year-old defendants, who were the infant's parents, severely neglected their baby in their Brunsbüttel apartment, leading to the child's death on September 26, 2025. An autopsy confirmed the cause of death was starvation.

Prosecutors had argued for a murder conviction, citing the cruelty of the act. They presented evidence that the parents intentionally withheld adequate food and fluids from their daughter, born in May 2025, fully aware that she would not survive. During the trial, the father and mother, who also have three-year-old twins, spoke of their struggles with childcare. The mother noted that the parents had realized the baby was losing weight about two weeks before its death, and their overwhelming feelings of inadequacy were evident in their failure to attend scheduled pediatrician appointments.
