Parking lot eyed for merchants displaced by Feria Barrio Lindo fire

Santa Cruz Mayor Carlos Manuel Saavedra announced plans to temporarily relocate merchants displaced by a devastating fire at the Feria Barrio Lindo. The fire, which consumed more than 10,000 stalls, has left thousands of vendors without a place to sell their goods. The municipal government is considering using a commercial parking lot as a temporary marketplace.

Saavedra visited the fire-ravaged site with national ministers of Public Works and Economy. He met with leaders of the affected merchant associations, emphasizing the city's commitment to supporting them. "We understand that this is a private activity, but we can also help by facilitating things," Saavedra stated. He stressed the importance of ensuring the merchants' safety while they resume their livelihoods, noting that entry into the damaged structures is still too dangerous.

The cleanup and removal of debris, including an estimated 70 tons of twisted iron from collapsed structures, is a significant undertaking expected to last at least three weeks. The mayor urged vendors not to enter the hazardous zone. To facilitate a swift return to business, the city is exploring the possibility of using the commercial parking lot for sales on Wednesdays and Saturdays, distinct from street vending.

Merchant representatives have already begun measuring available spaces in the proposed parking lot and on sidewalks. They aim to restart their businesses by August 19, coordinating with municipal officials. The leadership of the Feria Barrio Lindo Federation has suspended operations until August 15, awaiting the finalization of these temporary arrangements. The mayor also assured coordination with debris removal teams to avoid disrupting market days.
