Parliament speaker: ‘The president will not relinquish his powers during the election’

Kyrgyzstan’s president will not have to surrender his powers while taking part in the presidential election, according to Parliament Speaker Marlen Mamataliev.

In an interview with journalist Ali Toktakunov, Mamataliev said existing law does not require the president to stop performing his duties during the campaign. “Even if the president is a candidate, he will not leave office. There is no such restriction under the law, and he will fully perform all his functions,” he said.

Mamataliev also said all three branches of government would continue operating normally. His comments addressed speculation that he might become acting president during the election period.

Kyrgyzstan’s next presidential election is scheduled for January 27, 2027. President Sadyr Japarov has previously said openly that he intends to participate and seek a second presidential term.
