Parliamentary Committee Recovers Hidden Land Files Near Mukono Office, Orders Police Probe

Parliamentary investigators discovered hundreds of land files concealed in nearby shops and vehicle boots during an inspection of the Mukono Zonal Land Office. The Committee on Lands, Housing and Urban Development has now ordered a police investigation into the matter.

The committee, led by Chairperson Edison Rugumayo, was probing allegations of land fraud, delays in title processing, and other irregularities affecting land transactions in the Mukono District. During their visit, legislators questioned staff and examined how land records were handled and stored.

Concerns were raised about alleged irregularities involving land titles reportedly created in wetlands and central forest reserves. Officials were questioned about over 200 titles allegedly issued in Mabira Forest and more than 50 titles reportedly created on the government-owned Njeru Stock Farm. Senior Staff Surveyor Steven Ndegeya requested more time to compile a report on transaction trails and original documents.

The investigation also uncovered issues with office security, as keys to the land office were reportedly left with a private security guard instead of being secured by the designated security head. The committee recovered the hidden files with police assistance, with officials claiming they were directed by Ndegeya to store them outside the office.
