Partial Solar Eclipse to Grace Croatian Skies on August 12, 2026

Residents in Croatia will have the chance to witness a striking astronomical event on August 12, 2026: a partial solar eclipse. While a total eclipse will be visible in places like Spain, Iceland, and Greenland, Croatia will experience a significant partial obscuration, particularly in its western regions.

The eclipse is notable for occurring just before sunset. For optimal viewing, observers should seek locations with clear, unobstructed views to the west or northwest, ideally from elevated positions. In most Croatian cities, the eclipse will begin between 7:25 PM and 7:30 PM local time. Zagreb will see the first contact at 7:25 PM, with 77% of the sun's diameter obscured. Rijeka will experience an even greater obstruction of 85.05%, starting at 7:27 PM. Other cities like Osijek will see 52.70% obscuration, while Poreč is set for a remarkable 89.44% obstruction, beginning at 7:27 PM.

The sun is expected to set between 7:53 PM and 8:17 PM, depending on the location. Since the peak phase of the eclipse will occur after sunset, viewers in Croatia will only see the initial part of the event. Despite this, astronomers emphasize that it will still be a rare and enjoyable sight.

Crucially, experts have issued a strong warning: never look directly at the sun, even through binoculars or telescopes, without proper protective filters. Only certified solar viewing glasses or filters should be used to avoid permanent vision damage. The Zvjezdarnica Zagreb will host a special program for the eclipse. For those who miss this event, the next partial solar eclipse visible from Croatia will be on August 2, 2027, with a total eclipse not expected until September 3, 2081.

Adding to the celestial spectacle, conditions for viewing the Perseid meteor shower, known as the "Tears of St. Lawrence," will be exceptional on the same night. The Croatian Astronomical Association notes that the moon will not interfere with visibility, with an average activity of about 100 meteors per hour predicted. The best viewing time will be from midnight until dawn, when the constellation Perseus is high in the sky.
