Parts of Karachi may face water shortage after power breakdown at Dhabeji pumping station

Karachi residents face the prospect of water shortages as a power breakdown at the Dhabeji pumping station disrupts the city's primary water supply. The Dhabeji station is crucial, as it serves as the main intake point for Karachi's water, and even minor power interruptions can lead to immediate service disruptions.

K-Electric has declared a cable fault at the station. A technical team has reached the site to rectify the fault.

The power failure occurred Sunday morning due to a cable fault, according to K-Electric, the city's power supplier. This has resulted in the temporary shutdown of three major pumps at the Dhabeji facility. The Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) estimates this will cause a daily deficit of approximately 75 million gallons in the city's water transmission.

Several densely populated areas are expected to be affected by the disruption. These include parts of North Nazimabad, Nazimabad, Gulberg Town, New Karachi, Landhi, Korangi, and Scheme 33. The KWSC is in continuous communication with K-Electric to expedite the repair of the fault and the full restoration of electricity.

The Corporation estimates a temporary shortfall of 75 million gallons per day in the city’s water supply due to the cable fault.

Once power is fully restored, all pumps will be reactivated to normalize the water supply. This incident follows a similar electricity outage earlier in the month at the K-2 Pumping Station, which also caused significant disruptions. The city is also grappling with the rising costs of water infrastructure, as evidenced by a recent Sindh cabinet approval for a 40% increase in the cost of a dedicated water line project.

All pumps will be made operational immediately after complete restoration of power to bring the water supply back to normal.
