The incident occurred on February 5, 2026, aboard a flight from Jeju to Gimpo. The passenger, seated in an emergency exit row, claimed he misinterpreted the flight attendant's explanation about opening the cover during an emergency. He believed the instruction meant he should open it immediately.

His actions led to a roughly one-hour delay for the flight. The court acknowledged that the passenger's misunderstanding seemed justified. Judges noted that if the passenger had intended to tamper with the emergency exit for personal curiosity, he likely would not have stopped at merely removing the cover.
