Patagonia Surpasses Central Argentina in Social and Productive Map

Argentina's economic heartland is shifting, with the Patagonian region increasingly outperforming the country's traditional central powerhouses in social and productive indicators.

The expansion of the Vaca Muerta energy field and related infrastructure projects are driving this transformation. Historically peripheral in demographic and economic terms, Patagonian provinces are now reporting superior living conditions. While central regions maintain their economic strength, they are no longer the sole leaders on a national level.

This shift is a key finding from the Provincial Social Ranking compiled by Empiria, a consultancy led by former Economy Minister Hernán Lacunza. The study analyzes how productive heterogeneity has evolved into regional and social heterogeneity. "Sectoral productive transformation is advancing profoundly and unevenly across regions and population segments," the report states.

The ranking, which assesses 24 jurisdictions using a dozen variables across social situation, labor market, housing, and living conditions, places Buenos Aires city first. However, it is followed closely by five Patagonian provinces: Río Negro, Tierra del Fuego, Neuquén, Chubut, and Santa Cruz. This consistent performance across various metrics, rather than a single exceptional indicator, highlights the region's broad improvement.
