Patisserie Teemu Aura's Parent Company Faces Bankruptcy; Business Continues Under New Ownership

Zugu Oy, the company that previously operated the Patisserie Teemu Aura bakery chain, is facing bankruptcy proceedings initiated by the pension insurance company Ilmarinen. The bankruptcy application was filed on Tuesday, July 21.

Before corona, people used to stop by on their commute to get coffee and a bun or a sandwich from their local cafe.

Teemu Aura, the owner of Zugu Oy, cited the challenges faced by the cafe and bakery sector, beginning with the COVID-19 pandemic and the rise of remote work. The situation was further exacerbated by the energy crisis and the soaring prices of grain and other raw materials following the war in Ukraine, which eroded profit margins.

Despite the financial difficulties, the business operations of Patisserie Teemu Aura have been transferred to Juvenes, a restaurant company owned by the student union of Tampere University. Aura expressed relief that a buyer was found, emphasizing that the change should not be noticeable to regular customers, as the cafes, restaurants, and mobile kiosks, known as Pullabiilit, will continue to operate as before.

It feels like bankruptcies are happening everywhere these days.

Juvenes, a nationwide restaurant company that also manages event services and student cafeterias, is seen as having strong potential to continue the business. Zugu Oy's revenue fell 11% to just under 2.2 million euros in the last fiscal year, resulting in a 100,000 euro operating loss. Aura acknowledged the stress of the situation but views it as a part of life, noting that bankruptcies seem to be occurring frequently.
