Pauli Ahvonen, snowmobile pioneer and entrepreneur, dies at 90

Pauli Kari Ahvonen, a Finnish entrepreneur whose life was marked by curiosity and a drive for innovation, has passed away at the age of 90. Born in Enso on August 15, 1935, Ahvonen's early experiences as a child refugee in Sweden during the war instilled in him a lifelong curiosity about the world, a love for languages, and the courage to embrace new challenges.

Ahvonen's entrepreneurial journey began in 1958 when he founded a car dealership in Helsinki, drawing on his childhood familiarity with the automotive industry. However, his career took a significant turn with the advent of snowmobiles. Recognizing the potential of Ski-Doo in a market where the sport was virtually unknown in Finland, he co-organized the country's first snowmobile safari in 1968. This venture led him to work for the Canadian company Bombardier, where he built sales networks for Ski-Doo and Rotax across Europe. His involvement extended to competing in snowmobile races, winning the Finnish championship in 1969.

A memorable experience for Ahvonen was his presentation of the Ski-Doo in Moscow in 1971, where he introduced the term "snegohod" (snow walker), which was later adopted into the Russian language. After returning to Finland, he held leadership roles in finance and worked in the boat and real estate sectors. Throughout his life, Ahvonen remained passionate about motorsports, including a GT-class victory at the 1961 Jyväskylä Grand Prix.

In his retirement, Ahvonen continued to pursue his interests, studying Russian and maintaining a keen focus on technological advancements. He was particularly enthusiastic about the electrification of transportation, writing a blog titled "eelläkävijä" (pioneer). In 2023, he had the opportunity to personally thank Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden for the assistance Sweden provided him as a child refugee. Pauli Ahvonen is remembered as a man whose curiosity, courage, and belief in new possibilities never faded.
