PBNU Sets Islamic New Year 1448 H for June 17, 2026

The Indonesian Ulema Council (PBNU) has announced that the Islamic New Year, 1 Muharram 1448 Hijriyah, will be observed on Wednesday, June 17, 2026. This determination was made after the PBNU's Falakiyah Institute conducted a moon sighting on Monday, 29 Dzulhijjah 1447 Hijriyah (June 15, 2026).

According to a statement shared on PBNU's official Instagram account, @nuonline.id, all moon sighting points reported no visibility of the crescent moon. Consequently, the institute concluded that the beginning of Muharram 1448 H would fall on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, based on the principle of 'istikmal' (completion of the lunar month).

PBNU has urged its regional branches to disseminate this information. The organization also encouraged Muslims to offer prayers for blessings in the new year. Notably, PBNU's declared date for 1 Muharram 1448 Hijriyah differs from the dates set by the Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs and Muhammadiyah, both of which have designated Tuesday, June 16, 2026, as the start of the new Islamic year, a date also marked as a national holiday.
