PC was ‘a father figure’

Police Constable Rommel Douglas was honored yesterday as a man defined by responsibility, humility, and service, with relatives and colleagues emphasizing his profound commitment to family. Douglas, who was killed on July 28, was laid to rest following a funeral service at the Morvant Central Community Centre.

Mikhail Douglas, the deceased officer's younger brother, shared how Rommel became a father figure during their childhood after their mother traveled abroad. "He stepped in and became the father that we did not have," Mikhail said. "He made sure there was food on the table, our clothes were ironed and ready for school, and he gave us the security of knowing that although our mother was not there physically, we were safe in his hands."

Mikhail recalled his brother's generosity, recounting a time when Douglas used his own money to buy him a FUBU jersey, Timberland boots, and spending money for a school bazaar. He noted that Douglas consistently prioritized the needs of others, a trait he carried into his own fatherhood. Addressing Douglas' three children, Mikhail stated their father loved them "more than words can express" and was deeply involved in their upbringing, emphasizing presence, financial and emotional support, and setting clear standards.

At the time, I felt like I had all the money in the world. And for Rommel, he simply wanted me to enjoy myself.

Douglas also prioritized his children's education, sending Mikhail voice notes at the end of each term to discuss report cards and identify areas for improvement. "He wanted his children to have a better education than he had, and he was passionate about making that happen," Mikhail explained. Beyond family, Douglas quietly supported relatives, repaired items, and was always available when needed. He also harbored a passion for football, once aspiring to be a sports journalist, and remained a devoted Real Madrid supporter.
