Pécresse Launches Mission to Get Paris Region's RER D Back on Track

More than 630,000 people use the RER D every day, yet the commuter line's punctuality fell below 85% in July. For Valérie Pécresse, president of the Île-de-France region, that performance is "unacceptable."

Île-de-France Mobilités said Pécresse had assigned an independent expert to "get the RER D back on track" after the line failed to meet the punctuality targets set in its contract with SNCF. The route links Paris with the northern suburbs as far as Creil, and with southeastern suburbs extending to Melun and Malesherbes.

Line works, the adjustment period for new rolling stock and a heatwave have all contributed to more frequent delays. Pécresse said those factors did not explain the situation. The expert will begin the mission in November, identifying and understanding operational failures before building an action plan with Transilien SNCF Voyageurs and SNCF Réseau for 2027 and 2028.

Île-de-France Mobilités has set an ambition of improving RER D punctuality by as much as six percentage points by 2030. SNCF said last week that the line would operate with frequency reduced by nearly 5% at least until the end of 2026, while it expands its capacity to maintain the trains.
