Pedestrian and Shopping Street Scenarios Debated for Riga

Riga is currently exploring the potential of pedestrian zones, with Alberta Street and a segment of Antonijas Street being transformed into car-free areas for a limited time. These experimental closures will remain in effect for a few more weekends, concluding on September 20.

This initiative follows previous trials by the city's municipality, including the closure of Tērbatas Street to vehicles and a weekend-long experiment in the Quiet Center last year. These past efforts indicate a sustained interest in evaluating the impact of pedestrianization on urban life and commerce.

However, the idea of establishing a dedicated pedestrian and shopping street in Riga's city center has been a subject of debate for years. While the concept aims to revitalize the urban core and enhance the experience for shoppers and pedestrians, it has yet to move beyond discussion and experimentation into a concrete, materialized plan.
