Pedestrian dies in hospital after being hit by car in Vievis

A woman died in hospital after a car struck her on the Vilnius-Kaunas-Klaipėda route near Vievis, Lithuanian police said.

The crash happened on Kauno Street in Vievis, in the Elektrėnai municipality, at about 2:23 p.m. on Sept. 6. Police said the Škoda driver, born in 1991, could not stop when the pedestrian, born in 1943, suddenly entered the road.

The driver told emergency services that she had been traveling in the second lane, where roadworks were underway. As she approached the end of the construction section, the woman ran onto the road. The Škoda struck her with the front passenger side, throwing her into the first lane.

A VDL bus was traveling in that lane. Its driver swerved right to avoid hitting the woman. The bus passengers were not injured. The pedestrian remained conscious when medics arrived and was taken to a Vilnius hospital, but a hospital nurse later informed police that she died in the emergency department’s resuscitation ward from multiple injuries.

The Škoda driver was sober and suffered shock after the crash. Police have opened a preliminary investigation.
