Pedro 'Papi' Perlaza, Ecuadorian footballer and coach, dies at 73

Pedro 'Papi' Perlaza, a significant figure in Ecuadorian football as both a player and a coach, has passed away at the age of 73. His death was announced on Monday, July 20, 2026.

Perlaza began his football journey in his home province of Esmeraldas before joining Barcelona SC at 17, where he made his debut. He played for Barcelona SC in two separate stints and also represented other Litoral clubs such as Carmen Mora Encalada, Emelec, 9 de Octubre, Deportivo Quevedo, and Esmeraldas Petrolero, where he retired in 1988.

After his playing career, Perlaza dedicated himself to coaching and player development. He served as an assistant coach for Calvi FC's under-17 team and the Ecuador national U-17 team. His most impactful work as a developer of talent occurred in Sucumbíos province with Caribe Jr., where he played a role in nurturing future stars like Antonio Valencia, Fidel Martínez, Enner Valencia, and Miller Bolaños.

The Ecuadorian football community has mourned his loss. The Ecuadorian Football Federation (FEF) issued a statement expressing sorrow and highlighting his extensive playing and coaching career.
