Pegula Makes Strong Start at US Open as Djokovic Exits Early

Jessica Pegula opened her US Open campaign with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Romania’s Elena Gabriela Ruse, recovering after a shaky start to reach the second round.

The third seed wasted eight break-point chances in the third game, allowing Ruse to test her composure. Pegula then broke serve in the next two games and took control of the match. The 32-year-old is the highest-ranked American player in the tournament.

“I felt nervous today. I think everyone is very nervous and under pressure for the next three days. But I’m happy it’s over and done with now,” Pegula said after the match.

The day also brought a major setback for Novak Djokovic. The Serbian, who had been dealing with health problems, lost a five-set battle to Argentina’s Mariano Navone, ranked 48th in the world. Navone won 7-6 (7-5), 5-7, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1.

Djokovic vomited on court and struggled with cramps late in the match. He briefly appeared to regain control in the fourth set, breaking Navone to lead 2-1 with a precise backhand down the line. The loss was Djokovic’s earliest Grand Slam exit in two decades and ended his latest attempt to win a record 25th major title.
