Pei Tty asks for time to develop the next Pearly-Thinaah pair

Wong Pei Tty does not expect Malaysia’s next elite women’s doubles partnership to emerge overnight. The new national coach has asked for patience as the program tries to develop a pair capable of matching Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah.

Pei Tty, a former world No. 1 women’s doubles player with Chin Ee Hui, said the current benchmark itself took years to build. “Pearly-Thinaah also did not form in one day. Instead, they needed a four- to five-year program to mature and develop before the results could be seen,” she told reporters after a training session at the Badminton Malaysia Academy.

She said other pairs deserved the same opportunity because some had only emerged over the past one or two years. International tournaments, she added, would allow young players to see for themselves where they lagged in speed, power, attack and technique.

Players could then return to training with a clearer understanding of what they needed to improve. “Nothing will happen in one day,” Pei Tty said.

The former Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008 Olympic player acknowledged that she still needed time to assess the national women’s doubles lineup. She officially began the job this week and had not yet been able to monitor the senior players because the China Masters was taking place in Shenzhen.

Pei Tty returned to the Badminton Association of Malaysia after ending her work as a talent-development coach in Singapore the previous month. She brings new experience in leadership and player development to the national squad.
