Pekanbaru and Riau Province Collaborate to Pursue Overdue Motor Vehicle Taxes

The Pekanbaru city government and the Riau provincial government are joining forces to pursue overdue motor vehicle taxes, a move designed to increase regional income and strengthen fiscal independence. This collaboration aims to enhance public compliance with tax regulations.

"This is a form of cooperation between the Mayor of Pekanbaru and the Riau Provincial Government," stated Acting Governor SF Hariyanto. He emphasized that Pekanbaru's government apparatus, down to the neighborhood level, is prepared. The involvement of Family Welfare Empowerment (PKK) cadres will bolster efforts to inform residents about overdue taxes for both rural and urban land and buildings (PBB-P2) and motor vehicles (PKB).

These cadres will act as educators and reminders, encouraging taxpayers to fulfill their obligations. "We hope all parties can work hard so that this information reaches the public and encourages them to pay taxes again," Hariyanto added. Pekanbaru is targeting approximately Rp 159 billion in overdue motor vehicle taxes from an estimated 393,000 vehicles.

Hariyanto expressed optimism that the collection target will be significantly met by the end of 2026, potentially serving as a model for other regions in Riau. Mayor Agung Nugroho of Pekanbaru appreciated the provincial government's strategic initiative, calling it a concrete step toward regional fiscal capacity and sustainable development. Pekanbaru aims to collect at least 60% of the total outstanding taxes through persuasive approaches and extensive socialization.
