Peña says 'irreconcilable' differences between Lula and Milei haven't hurt Mercosur

Paraguayan President Santiago Peña asserted on Friday that the deep-seated disagreements between Argentine President Javier Milei and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, which he described as "irreconcilable," have not harmed the Mercosur integration mechanism. Peña stated his commitment to mediating such disputes to prevent them from impacting the bloc, which includes Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay, with Bolivia in the process of full accession.

Despite a significant diplomatic rift between Brazil and Argentina, triggered by Milei's repeated insults against Lula, Peña affirmed that the Mercosur bloc has so far been spared from the consequences. This tension escalated after Milei's participation in a presidential campaign event in Brazil, where he referred to Lula as a "jailbird" and a "thief." In response, Brazil downgraded diplomatic relations, expelling the Argentine ambassador and withholding its own representative.

Peña acknowledged that Lula and Milei hold "irreconcilable differences" at this stage. However, he highlighted that both leaders recognize the importance of their countries' bilateral relationship, which transcends their personal animosity. This understanding, Peña suggested, is crucial for maintaining stability within Mercosur, even amidst the ongoing political friction between the two South American giants.
