Pentagon Chief Warns Europe Faces 'Invasion of Dangerous Ideologies' in Normandy Speech

Speaking at the American Cemetery in Normandy on the 82nd anniversary of the D-Day landings, U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth issued a stark warning about "dangerous ideologies" encroaching upon Europe. He drew a parallel between the historical fight against Nazism and contemporary challenges, noting that "other European beaches are being stormed by other dangerous ideologies." Hegseth pointed to the arrival of boats and people on the shores of Spain, Italy, Greece, and Bulgaria, questioning whether European capitals would act decisively. "It is not too late to act," he asserted, emphasizing the need for firmer measures on immigration. His remarks echo sentiments previously voiced by U.S. officials, including former President Donald Trump, who have criticized Europe's immigration policies. The U.S. National Security Strategy has also flagged concerns, warning of potential "civilizational erosion" in Europe due to migration, which it claims impacts national identities and is exacerbated by policies perceived as undermining state sovereignty. These comments follow Vice President JD Vance's controversial remarks linking a British teenager's death to the "self-loathing policy of the West" and mass migration. Beyond immigration, Hegseth addressed collective security, recalling the shared responsibility during the Normandy operation. He urged European governments to strengthen their defense capabilities, stating, "America will lead. It must. But capable allies must stand with us, shoulder to shoulder, in decisive moments." He reaffirmed Washington's commitment to its partners, expecting them to contribute equally to common security.
