Perak mining department suspends three companies for violating regulations

The Perak Mineral and Geoscience Department (JMG) is maintaining a firm stance on environmental compliance for mining operations in Hulu Perak, ensuring that companies adhere to strict regulations regarding wastewater management and pollution control. JMG Perak Director Nizarulikram Abdul Rahim stressed that all mining activities are subject to rigorous conditions, with a particular focus on the proper management of wastewater and the prevention of pollution.

JMG's records reveal a history of enforcement actions against several companies. Rahman Hydraulic Tin Sdn Bhd (RHT), MCRE Resources, and Nalidah Tin Mine previously endured three-week suspensions in November 2025 for non-compliance. MCRE Resources faced an extended suspension in December due to violations of environmental impact assessment requirements and work stop orders. Operations for MCRE Resources only resumed in January after these orders were lifted.

Most recently, RHT was temporarily suspended on August 12 after JMG detected the discharge of acidic water with a pH between 2.29 and 2.33 from its detention ponds. This occurred after heavy rainfall, which exceeded the capacity of the existing drainage system. Nizarulikram confirmed the suspension, stating, "When JMG visited the site, it was found that untreated water was discharged into the river. So, we temporarily stopped their operations until they present a mitigation proposal." He added that operations would only be reconsidered once the department was satisfied with the proposed mitigation measures.

Nizarulikram also clarified that the enforcement actions against RHT are distinct from the ongoing investigation into the cause of the Perak River's bluish discoloration. He assured that any detected non-compliance would result in appropriate action, regardless of the broader environmental investigation. JMG has previously directed RHT to improve runoff water management, erosion control, and tailings pond maintenance, and to integrate specific water quality readings into daily reports. The department also mandated a shift in the lime dosing method to ensure proper treatment before any potential water discharge.
