Perlis achieves best-ever Sukma performance with 17 gold medals

Perlis has made history at the Malaysian Games (Sukma) in Selangor, securing its most successful outing ever with a remarkable 17 gold medals. This achievement marks the state's best performance in the 40-year history of the Sukma games.

Menteri Besar (Chief Minister) Abu Bakar Hamzah hailed the accomplishment as a significant positive development for the state's sports development. He attributed the success to the "continuous joint efforts" of athletes, coaches, sports associations, the State Sports Council (MSN), and all stakeholders involved in the state's development.

The Sukma games concluded with Perlis earning 17 gold, seven silver, and 18 bronze medals. Among the standout achievements was an athlete's performance in the shot put event, where a new Sukma record was set. This victory demonstrates that Perlis athletes are not only competitive but capable of setting new benchmarks on the national stage.

Wan Zikri Afthar Ishak, the State Youth and Sports Committee Chairman, emphasized that this performance surpasses even the state's showing when it hosted Sukma in 2014, where they won fewer than 12 gold medals. While the initial target of 20 gold medals was not met, he noted that many other states also fell short of their own targets, underscoring Perlis's exceptional performance relative to expectations and past achievements.
