Pernambuco governor swaps Senate candidate to maintain federation support

Pernambuco Governor Raquel Lyra has made a significant shift in her senatorial campaign strategy, withdrawing Miguel Coelho's candidacy to back Eduardo da Fonte. This decision, made Friday night during a meeting with Coelho, is intended to maintain the crucial support of the União-PP federation, which Da Fonte currently leads in the state.

Coelho, who had been campaigning for the Senate seat, expressed understanding for the decision, stating in a social media video, "To not put this project at risk, under any condition, threat, or pressure, we perceived, and she and I had a calm conversation, that it was time for us to withdraw our candidacy for the Senate."

While Lyra had previously shown support for Coelho, her current alliance-building efforts necessitate the backing of the União-PP federation. Lyra's political coalition already includes Avante, Podemos, Novo, and the PSDB/Cidadania federation. However, her main rival, former mayor João Campos (PSB), has assembled a broader alliance of 10 parties, including PT, PDT, MDB, and others.

The support of these parties is vital as it influences the amount of campaign advertising time candidates receive on radio and television. Campos is expected to have a significant advantage in airtime due to the larger congressional representation of his allied parties. Lyra's decision to align with Da Fonte, despite previously favoring Coelho, highlights the complex political maneuvering and the importance of federation support in securing electoral advantages.
