PERR Football Tournament Introduces Inaugural Malay Football Award

The 104th edition of the Piala Emas Raja-Raja (PERR), a historic Malaysian football tournament, will introduce the inaugural Anugerah Bola Sepak Melayu (Malay Football Award). This new accolade aims to recognize outstanding players and management throughout the competition, marking a significant modernization effort for the amateur championship.

Mohd Firdaus Mohamed, President of the Malay Football Association of Malaysia (PBMM), explained that the award was proposed by the Yang di-Pertua of Melaka and association patron, Tun Dr Mohd Ali Mohd Rustam, during a recent courtesy visit. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to inject new life into the PERR, moving away from traditional approaches to embrace contemporary football trends.

"We cannot remain stagnant despite being amateur," stated Mohd Firdaus. "Due to the passage of time, we must adapt to changes, and state football associations need to participate." Potential award categories being considered include Best Striker, Best Goalkeeper, and Best Management, with further discussions underway to finalize the list.

In addition to the new awards, the 104th PERR will feature invited guest teams and clubs, alongside state teams. This approach aims to broaden participation and align the tournament with current football developments, especially as some state teams have undergone privatization. PBMM will ensure that participating clubs are actively involved in football, registered with the Registrar of Societies, and possess relevant experience.

Sixteen teams have confirmed their participation, including guests like Penang Flex and UM Damansara United, as well as the traditional invitation for the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba). The Piala Agong match between Selangor and Kuala Lumpur on September 13 will serve as the season opener, with the PERR campaign commencing a week later. The decision to hold matches in Sabak Bernam is another novelty aimed at bringing the tournament closer to fans and increasing spectator engagement.
