Peru Declares July 27 a Compensable Non-Working Day for Public Employees

Peru's government has declared Monday, July 27, a non-working day for public sector employees, creating a "long weekend" that bridges the national holidays of July 28 and 29. This measure, officialized by Supreme Decree N.° 075-2026-PCM, allows state workers to rest during this period.

However, the day is designated as "compensable," meaning public employees must make up for the missed work hours. They are required to recover these hours within ten days following the non-working day or according to timelines set by their respective public institutions. Importantly, July 27 retains its status as a business day for tax purposes.

For employees in the private sector, the day off is not mandatory. Whether they receive the day off depends on agreements reached between employers and their workers. If no consensus is achieved, the company will decide on granting the day off and how the hours will be compensated.

Essential services, including healthcare, security, transportation, electricity, water, telecommunications, ports, airports, lodging, restaurants, and the financial system, will continue to operate normally throughout this period, as stipulated by the decree.
