Peru earthquake: 7.2 magnitude quake damages 122 homes, injures three

A magnitude 7.2 earthquake shook southern Peru, causing damage to 122 homes, twelve health facilities, and twelve educational institutions. Three people sustained injuries, and power supply was momentarily disrupted in some areas.

The National Civil Defense Institute (Indeci) reported that the earthquake, with an epicenter in the Ayacucho region, was felt strongly in nine nearby districts. Authorities are still conducting damage assessments and needs analyses.

Despite the earthquake's magnitude, its origin at a depth of over 100 kilometers prevented critical effects, though it was felt across several regions, including Lima. The injured individuals suffered contusions and received medical attention at local hospitals.

Damage was also reported in health centers and schools in Ayacucho and the neighboring Cusco and Apurímac regions. While power service has been restored, a section of a highway between Jaqui and Piedra Blanca was affected, restricting traffic.
