Peru Earthquake Victims Can Get Free IDs to Access Aid

Victims of the magnitude 5.4 earthquake that struck the Chupaca province in Peru's Junín region on July 18 are eligible for a free National Identity Document (DNI) through a new campaign. The initiative, launched by the National Registry of Identification and Civil Status (Reniec), also extends to residents of the Chupuro district in Huancayo province, aiming to facilitate recovery after the seismic event.

Reniec announced on Wednesday that the campaign will allow citizens to obtain a new DNI at no cost. This document is crucial for accessing state-provided humanitarian aid, social programs, and other essential services for families impacted by the earthquake. The free DNI issuance is specifically prioritized for individuals in poverty who need to replace their essential identification.

The campaign is scheduled for Thursday, July 30, in the Chupuro District Auditorium (main plaza) from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. On Friday, July 31, Reniec brigades will operate in two locations: the main plaza of the town center of Pumpunya in Chongos Bajo, and the Chupuro District Auditorium. Both sessions will run from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

This initiative follows a previous campaign on July 20, where Reniec processed 60 free DNI applications in the affected areas. The agency anticipates assisting approximately 300 individuals in Chongos Bajo and Chupuro, districts with a combined population of about 4,000. Reniec emphasized that priority will be given to those in conditions of poverty and extreme poverty who require their identity documents to access state benefits during emergencies.
