Peru Electoral Jury Officializes Presidential Runoff Between Fujimori and Sánchez

Peru's National Electoral Jury (JNE) has officially declared that the nation will head to a presidential runoff election on June 7, pitting right-wing candidate Keiko Fujimori of Fuerza Popular against left-wing contender Roberto Sánchez of Juntos por el Perú. This decision follows the general elections held on April 12, and the JNE's proclamation certifies the results of the vote count, which concluded after 33 days.

Keiko Fujimori emerged as the leading candidate in the first round, garnering 17.19% of the vote with 2,877,678 ballots. Roberto Sánchez secured second place with 12.03%, receiving 2,015,114 votes. The race for the second position was exceptionally tight, with far-right candidate Rafael López Aliaga trailing closely behind Sánchez, securing 11.91% with 1,993,905 votes.

The electoral process was marked by significant delays in the opening of polling stations, particularly in Lima and the United States, leading to accusations of fraud from López Aliaga, which were ultimately unsubstantiated. The JNE proceeded with the proclamation of results after the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) confirmed the 100% vote count.

This second round will be a rematch of the 2021 elections, pitting Fujimori, the daughter and political heir of former president Alberto Fujimori, against Sánchez, who represents the party of former president Pedro Castillo. The election cycle has been characterized by a vast field of 35 presidential candidates and a widespread disillusionment with Peru's political class, reflected in the substantial number of blank and null votes, which collectively surpassed the vote count of any individual candidate.

The formulas that will seek the head of state for the 2026-2031 period were proclaimed in a ceremony presided over by the president of the JNE, Roberto Burneo, who certified the results of the general elections of last April 12.
