Peru Resumes Classes in Rain-Affected Schools

Peru's Ministry of Education (Minedu) confirmed that in-person classes will resume this Monday for schools in Villa El Salvador, Villa María del Triunfo, and San Juan de Miraflores. These educational institutions had been impacted by recent heavy rainfall in the southern Lima region.

The decision aims to restore educational services under adequate conditions for students, teachers, and staff. Minister of Education José Antonio Chang Escobedo personally supervised recovery work at several affected schools on August 23. These efforts involved repairing classrooms, painting, fumigation, replacing educational materials, and upgrading technological equipment, with support from the armed forces, parents, teachers, and school directors.

At the Juan Pablo II school in Villa El Salvador, which serves over 300 students from early childhood and primary levels, the minister observed the actions taken to rehabilitate damaged spaces. Students are expected to return to classrooms following the completion of these repairs. Minedu also inspected the Miguel Grau and Mariscal Eloy Ureta schools, where fumigation work has concluded. Measures were coordinated at these schools to enhance the safety of students, teachers, and administrative personnel before the resumption of face-to-face activities.

As part of the recovery process, the Juan Pablo II school received 25 new computers for its technological innovation classroom. These wireless-enabled computers replace those damaged by the rains and were outdated for current educational needs. Additionally, educational materials lost due to the precipitation are being replenished. Minedu stated it will continue to supervise rehabilitation efforts alongside local authorities and educational communities to ensure the continuity of classes and the normal development of school activities in the affected institutions.
