Peru Seeks Volunteers for Pope Leo XIV's 2026 Visit

The Peruvian Catholic Church is actively recruiting volunteers for an upcoming papal visit, seeking individuals aged 18 to 45 to join the 'Friends of Leo' initiative. Pope Leo XIV is scheduled to visit Peru from November 11 to 16, 2026.

The program aims to mobilize people to assist the thousands of pilgrims expected to attend the pontiff's activities. Volunteers will participate in a comprehensive training process, including spiritual, pastoral, and human development. They will also commit to a code of conduct and safety protocols.

Assigned roles for 'Friends of Leo' will span various support areas. These include managing and securing event spaces, welcoming and assisting pilgrims, communication, logistics, providing first aid, and offering translation services. The Episcopal Conference of Peru emphasizes that volunteers will serve as key points of contact, offering guidance, listening, and companionship to attendees.

The initiative's name, 'Friends of Leo,' honors Pope Leo XIV's significant pastoral experience in Peru prior to his election as Pope. Monsignor Luis Alberto Huamán Camayo, president of the Episcopal Commission for Youth and Laity, encapsulated the spirit of the recruitment with the phrase, “Whoever finds a volunteer, finds a friend of Leo.” Details on the registration process will be published on the official website for the papal visit.
