Peru to invest millions in restoring historic colonial temple

The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Peru's La Libertad region is set for a major S/30.3 million restoration. The project will revive the colonial-era church and convent, which has survived earthquakes since its construction after the 1619 quake.

The intervention will use the "Works for Taxes" mechanism, with technical support from Proinversión. The goal is to preserve this significant historical and religious monument in northern Peru, enhancing its value for cultural, educational, tourist, and community activities. Beyond architectural preservation, the initiative aims to improve visitor experiences and stimulate local development.

Restoration work includes structural reinforcement and modernization of services. Upgrades will cover sanitary and electrical networks, drainage systems, internet, surveillance cameras, and communication equipment. The project also involves renovating the parish house and administrative areas.

A cultural interpretation service with specialized equipment will be installed for guided tours and exhibitions. Additionally, a dissemination and awareness program will target residents and tourism stakeholders to promote the monument's protection and appreciation. The restoration is expected to strengthen tourist circuits in Pacasmayo, benefiting local businesses like restaurants, artisans, and transport providers.
