Peter Cullen, the voice of Optimus Prime, dies at 85

Peter Cullen, the actor whose resonant voice defined Optimus Prime for generations, has passed away at 85. His deep baritone gave life to the leader of the Autobots in the 'Transformers' franchise, leaving an indelible mark on pop culture and shaping the concept of heroism for millions.

Born in Montreal in 1941, Cullen was an early graduate of the National Theatre School of Canada. While his career spanned decades and hundreds of roles, he will forever be remembered as the voice of Optimus Prime, a role he embodied from the original 1980s animated series through to recent films.

Cullen drew inspiration for Optimus Prime's voice from his older brother, a decorated Marine Corps veteran. He recalled his brother's advice: 'Peter, don't be a Hollywood hero. Be a real hero.' This guidance instilled in Cullen's portrayal a quiet strength and authority, making Prime a symbol of honor and integrity.

Beyond his most famous role, Cullen's vocal talents were remarkably diverse. He lent his voice to the melancholic Eeyore in Disney's 'Winnie the Pooh' series, showcasing his range from galactic commander to a gloomy stuffed donkey. He also voiced the villainous car K.A.R.R. in 'Knight Rider' and provided the unforgettable alien roars in the film 'Predator'. His voice was featured in numerous cartoons, including 'G.I. Joe' and 'Dungeons & Dragons'.

Cullen's dedication to Optimus Prime was evident when he refused to parody the character, believing the role deserved respect. The immense popularity of the character became clear after the audience's strong reaction to Prime's death in the 1986 animated film, prompting producers to bring him back. In recognition of his significant contributions, Cullen received a Lifetime Achievement Emmy Award in 2023 from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
