Peter Obi calls for urgent government action following mass abduction in Niger State

Peter Obi, a prominent Nigerian politician and presidential candidate, has strongly condemned the recent mass abduction and killing of residents in the Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State, demanding immediate and decisive government action. Obi described the attacks, which reportedly targeted communities and worshippers during Juma'at prayers, as an "emergency" that should "shake the conscience of every Nigerian." He expressed deep concern over reports suggesting that as many as 600 people, predominantly women, children, and the elderly, were abducted. Initial reports also indicate that approximately 30 individuals may have lost their lives in the assaults. "This is one case too many," Obi stated, emphasizing the brazen nature of the attacks occurring in broad daylight. He called for an "overwhelming intelligence-led security operation" to rescue all captives, secure affected communities, and dismantle the alleged networks enabling these "terrorists" to operate freely. The former Anambra State governor also pointed to infrastructure deficiencies as a significant impediment to the initial rescue response. He cited police reports indicating that difficult terrain and a collapsed bridge hampered efforts, reinforcing his long-standing advocacy for infrastructure repair. Obi urged the government to prioritize the safety and lives of Nigerians above political considerations, asserting that lost lives cannot be recovered. He conveyed solidarity with the Niger State government, affected residents, and the families of victims, stressing the need to restore public confidence in the government's ability to protect its citizens.
