Peter Obi Visits Benue Attack Victims, Demands Action on Insecurity

Former Anambra State governor and presidential candidate Peter Obi visited communities in Benue State that have recently suffered deadly attacks. He urged the federal government to intensify efforts to protect lives and property, stating that the government's failure in this regard is a breach of its sacred obligation.

Having visited, seen, and spoken with those affected, I urge the Federal Government to demonstrate a greater commitment to securing the lives and property of citizens and to closing the ungoverned spaces that have become breeding grounds for insecurity.

Obi visited Otukpo-Nobi, where over 10 people were killed or went missing, and Efeyi-Ugboju, where more than 13 residents were reportedly killed. He attended a mass burial for victims in Otukpo-Nobi and visited injured survivors in the hospital. During his visit, he learned that 14 people had been abducted along Ankpechi Road that same morning.

"The primary purpose of government is the security and welfare of its citizens," Obi stated. "When government fails in this responsibility, as it has with the people of Otukpo-Nobi, Efeyi-Ugboju, and other troubled communities, it must be reminded of that sacred obligation." He stressed that communities facing recurring violence should not be left to cope with such attacks alone.

The visit comes amid a series of attacks in Benue South. Suspected armed herders reportedly attacked Otukpo-Nobi on July 12, killing at least 10 residents. Another attack on July 28 in Efeyi-Ugboju reportedly claimed at least 15 lives. These incidents have heightened fears and prompted residents to flee their homes, calling for a stronger security presence. A mass burial for 15 victims of the Efeyi-Ugboju attack was held on August 9.
