Petition Emerges Over Surakarta Palace Leadership, Two Factions Respond

A leadership dispute within the Surakarta Sunanate (Keraton Surakarta) has resurfaced, prompted by an online petition on change.org demanding an end to the controversy. The petition, initiated by the "Indonesian Cultural Alliance," calls for government facilitation of an objective, transparent resolution based on law, custom, history, and verifiable evidence.

Addressed to the President, relevant ministers, the Governor of Central Java, the Mayor of Surakarta, and national legislative bodies, the petition suggests forming an independent team to examine historical documents and family trees. It even opens the possibility of scientific methods, such as DNA testing, if deemed relevant and agreed upon by all parties.

The emergence of the petition has elicited distinct responses from the two factions vying for control of the Keraton. KGPH Puruboyo, who claims the title Paku Buwono XIV, through his representative KPAAd Nur Wijaya Adiningrat, asserted that succession in the Surakarta Sunanate is a monarchical tradition, not subject to democratic processes. He further explained that the Keraton, as a traditional institution, follows established monarchical succession rules. While opinions can be heard, the ultimate decision rests with the king. Conversely, the Lembaga Dewan Adat (LDA), supporting KGPH Hangabehi as Paku Buwono XIV, expressed appreciation for public attention to the Keraton's future. GKR Koes Moertiyah Wandansari, known as Gusti Moeng, representing the LDA, stated that public interest highlights the Keraton's enduring importance as a Javanese cultural center.

Gusti Moeng emphasized that the Surakarta Sunanate is a legacy of history, culture, and the nation, passed down through generations. She believes resolving the dispute should not focus on determining a winner or loser but on preserving the Keraton's integrity. "Therefore, safeguarding the Keraton is not only the responsibility of the extended Keraton family but also a shared duty of the government and all Indonesian people," Gusti Moeng said.
