Petro discussed the situation in Colombia and Latin America during his visit to León XIV

Colombian President Gustavo Petro met with Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican on Thursday, engaging in discussions about the sociopolitical landscape of his country and the broader Latin American region. The talks focused on the repercussions of conflicts, organized crime, and climate change impacting the area.

Petro was received by the pontiff, an American, at the Apostolic Palace. Following the audience with the Pope, he met with the Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, and the Undersecretary for the Multilateral Sector for Relations with States, Monsignor Daniel Pacho, according to a statement from the Holy See.

During the meeting at the Secretariat of State, both sides expressed satisfaction with the strong relationship between Colombia and the Holy See. The statement highlighted the "positive and constant collaboration between the Church and the State" in promoting peace, reconciliation, and national unity.

The audience comes as Petro's presidential term nears its end on August 7.
