Petro's public vote for ally sparks opposition outcry

Colombian President Gustavo Petro ignited a firestorm of criticism from the opposition after he publicly revealed his vote for Iván Cepeda, a leftist presidential candidate and perceived ideological successor. Petro, who cast his ballot at the National Capitol in Bogotá, held up his marked ballot for Cepeda, the candidate of the Historical Pact party, the same party through which Petro himself ascended to the presidency in 2022.

The opposition swiftly condemned Petro's actions. Former Minister of Finance Mauricio Cárdenas argued that a president's vote "must be independent in the electoral process" and deemed Petro's public display "improper." He stated that the president should not be "engaging in public politicking" or revealing his vote, as it sends an inappropriate signal.

Presidential candidate and journalist Vicky Dávila also voiced strong opposition on social media. She accused Petro of "shamelessly politicking for his heir, Iván Cepeda," whom she described as "a man with no limits" who disrespects "the law, nor institutions." Dávila expressed hope for Petro's departure from the presidency, stating, "We are almost blessed to see another Colombia. We almost see you leaving the Casa de Nariño, thank God."

Petro, however, defended his actions, stating after voting that his vote, "like any other vote, is an indication, a mandate that is delivered by the population itself to whoever is going to lead Colombia." The controversy unfolds just days after the House of Representatives' Commission of Investigation and Accusation launched a preliminary investigation into Petro for alleged political participation, stemming from his public statements and posts related to the presidential campaign. The incident highlights the ongoing political tensions and scrutiny surrounding Petro's administration and its involvement in electoral processes.
