Petrobras and Pemex Forge Alliance for Gulf of Mexico Oil Exploration

Brazilian state-owned oil company Petrobras and its Mexican counterpart Pemex have agreed to explore joint oil and gas projects, signaling a significant collaboration in the energy sector. The two companies signed a two-year memorandum of understanding, with a particular focus on exploration activities in the Mexican waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

This partnership is strategically important for Pemex, which is grappling with substantial debt and a continuous decline in production. Petrobras, renowned for its advanced capabilities in deepwater oil extraction, is expected to bring crucial expertise to the largely unexplored Mexican sector of the Gulf. The US side of the Gulf is already a major hub for offshore oil and gas production.

Petrobras President Magda Chambriard expressed interest in exploring the Mexican Gulf, while Pemex Director General Juan Carlos Carpio Fragoso highlighted the potential to "optimize and increase production in deep waters." Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva had previously mentioned discussions with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum about Petrobras assisting Mexico with deepwater exploration.

The initiative has drawn criticism from environmental groups like Greenpeace Brasil, which views deepwater exploration as a risky venture given the climate crisis. They point to the 2010 BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico as a stark reminder of the environmental hazards associated with offshore drilling.
