Pezeshkian tells Putin Iran will prevail in its confrontation with the United States

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian told Vladimir Putin that he was convinced Iran would prevail in its confrontation with the United States, as the two leaders met during a Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Kyrgyzstan.

Pezeshkian said the memorandum of understanding signed by Washington and Tehran in June remained in force. The two countries resumed attacks on Monday after a pause of more than a month. He said Iran would continue honoring the memorandum if the United States returned to its obligations.

The Iranian president accused the White House of taking unilateral actions while claiming to defend democracy and human rights. He said Iranian scientists, schoolchildren and commanders had been killed, calling those actions unjustifiable.

If the United States returns to fulfilling the obligations included in the memorandum, then we will also respect them.

Pezeshkian also said support from Russia and other members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation could help Iran bypass unilateral U.S. measures. He called for opposition to Washington’s unilateral policy and said multilateral organizations could help neutralize sanctions and expand cooperation.

He thanked Putin for Moscow’s support during the conflict, including its efforts against sanctions and at the United Nations. Putin said Russia admired Pezeshkian’s courage and composure in defending Iran’s national interests, and added that Moscow was already supplying what Iran needed.
