Philippe Bouvard, 'Humoralist' Who Merged Information and Impertinence, Dies at 96

Philippe Bouvard, a celebrated figure in French media, has passed away at the age of 96. Known for his distinctive blend of information and impertinence, Bouvard left an indelible mark on journalism, radio, and television.

His prolific career spanned an astonishing 67 years, during which he penned an estimated 60,000 articles, hosted more than 15,000 radio and television programs, and authored 65 books, including the 1973 bestseller "Un oursin dans le caviar" (A Sea Urchin in the Caviar).

Bouvard's journey in journalism was remarkable, especially considering his early academic struggles. He was expelled from seven Parisian high schools and failed his baccalaureate. Furthermore, he was dismissed from the Centre de formation des journalistes (Journalism Training Center) after just six months, with a professor deeming him untalented.

Undeterred, Bouvard pursued his passion for writing, producing newspapers and plays in alexandrines from a young age. His vocation was solidified at age 8 after visiting a printing workshop owned by a great-uncle. He went on to become a pioneer in using wordplay in the press and is credited with inventing the modern talk show format on television.
