Philippine military says China injured sailor in sea clash

The Philippine military reported that a Chinese Coast Guard vessel attacked a Filipino sailor with a baton during a tense encounter on July 20. The confrontation took place as both sides approached the BRP Sierra Madre, a grounded vessel serving as a Philippine outpost in the disputed South China Sea.

The incident unfolded after two Philippine rubber boats were dispatched to deter a Chinese rigid-hull inflatable boat that had been circling and documenting the BRP Sierra Madre. According to the Philippine military's statement, Chinese personnel "reacted violently and aggressively," striking a Filipino Navy personnel on the head and damaging the rubber boat.
